Maternity Amendment Bill

If we were to teach peace to the world and if we were to carry a real war against war, we shall have to start with our children
The importance of role of mother in growth of child is being noticed and maternity amendment bill 2016 which raises 12 weeks of maternity leave to 26 weeks for women upto 2 surviving child sets a benchmark following WHO( World Health Organisation ) survey that cites 24 week leave for women with a paid leave.

  • All the establishments with 50 or more employees are to establish a creche in prescribed distance and the mother of child is allowed for four visits a day.
  • Paid maternity leave encourages women to take care of the child and continue to work with firm later on
  • Employers on agreement with working women can provide for the facility of work from home if the nature of work permits her to do so.
  • As per WHO report a child's nutrition due to breast feeding until 7 months makes the child immune from allergies and illnesses.
  • All the above mentioned benefits either directly or indirectly leads to enhancement of increment in LFPR.

Disadvantages:
  1. Unorganised sector, Firms with less than 10 employees have been neglected.
  2. The growth of third child will be affected since they have been given only 12 weeks leave
  3. The adopting mothers of less than 3 months babies / commissioning mothers are provided only with 12 weeks leave.
  4. Increased costs to companies and establishments might discourage them from hiring women employees and increased bias will lead lesser role of women in the economy.
  5. Non- Uniformity of laws like labor laws, central laws etc..
  6. It discriminates adopting fathers, transgenders and neglects the care of a father towards his child and his wife post pregnancy.
Conclusion:

Though its a positive step towards child growth and development with maternity leave for mother, it has to be extended to all surviving children and informal sector to be considered.Providing reimbursements and paying firms from public funds might reduce their non-interest in hiring women.Schemes like Janani Suraksha Yojana and Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana should also address job security or income source for women.
