You can't stop at the first serving and cannot help staying away from fried snacks. Or you have completely eliminated carbohydrate-rich foods from your diet and avoid get togethers to stay away from indulgent meals.Chances are you have fallen prey to eating disorders that do not support a healthy lifestyle. Eating at odd hours or worse not eating at all does not sustain your body for a very long time. These are short-term solutions that may lead to long-term losses.“Eating disorders usually correlate to some sort of compensation for emotional needs.

When we are stressed out, we end up using food as fulfilment,” says Annie Baxi, counseling psychologist.Fluctuation in weight, eating patterns that are unrelated to hunger, eating in private because eating with everyone makes you feel guilty of your portion size, exercising even when you are injured and imagining a co-relation between self-worth and body type are some of the common symptoms of eating disorders.“When you are unable to control your emotions, you end up using your body as means of retaliation or resistance,” Baxi further mentions.Disorders are considered to be a state of confusion. When it comes to our body, this confusion may lead to many health problems. Some common causes of eating disorders are:

1.Genetics

There are ongoing researches on the topic and many scientists relate eating disorders to family history. In some individuals, eating disorders have been found with no connection to dieting, weight loss theory or peer pressure.

2.Sexual/ physical abuse

A distress in old relationships leading to sexual or physical abuse of any kind can lead to eating disorders of both kinds.

3.Obsession with a thin body

One of the biggest factors that plays an important role in curating eating disorders in an individual himself. Idolizing a thin body-type can lead to obsession of losing weight in an unhealthy manner. This admiration can be of a person we work with, are friends with or we see on the television/ social media.

4.History of dieting

This factor originates from the above point of pre-occupation, since the obsession makes us follow different kinds of diets. This can lead to two types of eating disorders – one where we binge on food, as diets often lead to deficiencies in the body and second, where we are fascinated with the idea of thinning down.

5.Endevours that emphasize lean-ness

Joining ballet or getting a new modeling assignment may require a typical body type. This often pilots into diets of various kinds to achieve that desired body type.6.StressSitting jobs, long hours at work, job profile that is mentally or physically exhausting may head towards binge eating, where you often end up eating at irregular intervals of time.
