Google plans to shut down Orkut

Google today announced that it has decided to shut down Orkut, the very first social platform brought up by them in order to bring people together. It will be closed on September 30 after which users will be able to export or login into google+ and move their albums into google+.

Orkut grew google's 20% intiative which allowed employees to use a fifth of their working week on side projects.The decision to close Orkut has been a shock rather than surprising.

Starting today it will not be possible for new users to register account on Orkut. Existing users can access as usual though they are given interim period allowing users to change to google+. Transition to upcoming technologies has been the main motive of Google which already came up with domain business (domains.google.com) as an alternative to Godaddy.
