Universal just dropped a new trailer for The Mummy, the first in their planned shared “monster” universe. While the previous trailer emphasized the zero-gravity plane crash scene, this one focuses on the Mummy herself, and…I’m kind of into her shtick.

As the character Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis) explains in the trailer, “The hieroglyphs said she was named Ahmanet, chosen to be Egypt’s next queen. But her thirst for power led her down a darker path, one that had to be stopped.” Having been locked alive in a tomb-prison for thousands of years, Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) is freed by the carelessness of relic hunters Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) and Sergeant Vail (Jake Johnson). So it’s time to rampage!

And it looks like she’s got plans for Morton. His resurrection after the plane crash, seen in both the first trailer and this one, seems to be a result of Ahmanet’s magic. “Legend has it, she’s a being of unimaginable powers,” says Halsey. “Now she’s using you to regain them.”

They’re definitely going for more of an action-horror feel, like the original monster flick, as opposed to the action-adventure vibe in 1999’s The Mummy. But I was still kind of feeling Ahmanet’s quest. Like, when they say, “She will not stop until she has remade our world into her own,” do they mean she wants to tear down white supremacist patriarchy and institute her own matriarchy instead? Asking for a friend.

Teasing aside, Ahmanet looks like a pretty solid villain–and she’s played by a French-Algerian actress, so this is thankfully not a complete Gods of Egypt/Exodus situation. North African actors playing North African characters, you say?

Directed by Alex Kurtzman, The Mummy is due in theaters on June 9, 2017.

What’d you think of the trailer?
